Movie Night - Up In The Air. Mixed Verdict. #brianandkimmovienight

Elaborating a bit here:

Brian: Recommended. Bonus points for the most accurate depiction of tech trade show parties ever committed to film.

Kim: Meh.

Monologue Jokes - 12/12

I wrote a handful of topical monologue jokes for a workshop last weekend.  Before they get any stale and die like the references they are based on, I'm going to post them here.  I churned these out pretty quick, so I'll most likely look back at this post later and groan.  Interestingly enough though, a joke extremely similar to the first one below (about Tom Brady) ended up being used in SNL weekend update.  Given SNL this season I'm not sure if that is a good sign or a bad sign...

Tom Brady and his wife Gisele Bundchen welcomed their first son this week.  Word has it Tom Brady was in the delivery room supporting his wife during the delivery until a kicker took over at the last moment.

  • They haven’t yet named the child, which must mean the name ‘luckiest kid ever’ was taken.

On this week’s Biggest Loser finale, Danny Cahill took the title by losing a staggering 239 pounds narrowly edging out a competitor who lost 234 pounds.  In related news, a TV show this week made a man feel like a failure for losing 234 pounds.

A Massachusetts grand jury has indicted a 98 year old woman for strangling her 100 year old nursing home roommate.  A nursing home staffer broke down on the stand during the trial admitting it all could have been prevented if he had just turned Matlock on to distract them.

It’s Chanukah this week.  To celebrate, every night this week Tiger Woods has been announcing another in his series of ‘Eight Crazy Whores’.

On Friday Tiger Woods announced that he’s stepping away from golf indefinitely.  Immediately after, the world announced that no one gives a crap about golf anymore.

MTV’s new reality show Jersey Shore continues to face controversy for it’s depiction of Italian Americans.  When reached for comment, one of the male cast members replied ‘Ah whatsamatta yu?  You got your pasta fazool all in a bunch? Aay!’

Texas now has it’s first gay mayor.  It hasn’t even been a day, but big changes have already been set in motion.  Residents are now being asked to remember the Alamo -and- key LPGA events.

A high stakes version of dreidel borrowing elements from texas hold ‘em has become popular this holiday season.  The games can get really intense.  In a recent tournament a winner walked away with over one hundred thousand chocolate coins.

The man who plays the Patriots mascot was arrested this in a prostitution sting.  Bad news for Pat the patriot, but good news for the Philly fanatic.  This takes some of the heat off of him so he can get his bitches in line.

The internet is abuzz this weekend with a clip of Sarah Palin reading from William Shatner’s autobiography on the Tonight Show.  You heard that right folks, Sarah Pailin can read.

Don't Miss the ImprovBoston Holiday Fun-Raiser

A great event for a great (the greatest?) cause. Sure to be a blast.
The show features an amazing lineup, at least until Harry Gordon shows
up and ruins it.

A SNL Spoof That Gets It Right

I thought last night's SNL was stronger than much of the season thus far. The highlight for me was the 'Rockspit Underground Rock Festival' Sketch. It was spoofing an infomercial for the horrible Insane Clown Posse's 2009 Gathering of the Juggalos Festival that really has to be seen to be believed. Sure, the video went viral months ago and is kind of old news now, but I still think they really nailed what makes the source material so absurd in the first place. What they promote in the infomercial really does seem like a laundry list of the worst things in the world.

Here's the original (very NSFW by the way):

(If you don't want to sit through a long intro below, jump directly to the part SNL is spoofing.)

Tiger Woods '11 Wish List

All of a sudden I'm really excited for the extras and unlockables sure
to be included in Tiger Woods PGA Tour '11 (yes, Tiger '10 has already
been out for about 4 months). Here's my wish list:

* Updated hole locations
* Enhanced cell phone integration - schedule online games, erase text
messages to cocktail waitresses, and be reminded not to leave your
name in voicemails.
* In game thesaurus for looking up big words to use in place of 'cheating'
* New Taylor Made R9 drivers playable in game
* New driveway challenge - assume the role of scorned wife and see if
you can keep PGA superstars from leaving the driveway. Choose your
club wisely!
* Enhanced Wii Motion Plus Support
* Additional responses for requested police interviews - in addition
to 'yes' and 'no' from last year, 'reschedule indefinitely' now added
as an option
* Hundreds of new player animations to select from
* Hundreds of skanky women to select from
* Accident faker mini game - based on a random assignment of mode of
transportation, weapon wielded by wife, and stationary road obstacle
and try to make it look like an accident before the cops show up
* High stakes skins challenge
* Updated 'hole locations'

Fantastic Mr. Fox (or How Adults Stole All The Kids Movies)

I really loved 'The Fantastic Mr. Fox'.

Coming on the heels of 'Where The Wild Things Are', 'Fox' marks yet
another quirky, visionary director taking on well known material by a
famous author and making what would at least appear to be a kids film.
I liked both, but as 'Fox' lingers I feel much more satisfied than I
did with 'Wild Things' and I'm trying to put a finger on why. Both
were innovative and visually stunning. Like 'Wild Things' I didn't
get the feeling that Wes Anderson was primarily driven by the wants of
a young audience. Both films are true to the distinctive signatures
of their director. In fact, 'Fox' was as much of a Wes Anderson film
as 'Darjeeling Limited' was (full disclosure, I thought 'Darjeeling'
was a disappointment).

So what does that leave?

Story. Maybe I've read one too many screenwriting books. Maybe I'm
channeling frustration with the slow progress on my screenplay. But
the thing that jumps out about 'Fox' is that it had a much stronger
narrative. Stepping away from it, I can more easily sum up the plot.
I had a better feel for what happened and where things were going
next. That isn't to say that there wasn't strong subtext in 'Fox',
that subtext was just between the lines of a stronger more active
narrative. Part of that goes back to the director - Jonze's approach
has never seemed to be primarily focused on plot or structure and he
tends to work on movies that are more of a mind cuss. I think that a
film that carries the expectation of being a kids film also carries
the expectation of being plot driven. Adults have that expectation.
And if that's how adults feel, I can imagine that the feeling is even
stronger for kids (if only subconsciously).

I'm still skeptical that aside from the pretty pictures either movie
would really hold the attention of a child. Although my wife liked
'Fox' much more. That's gotta tell you something.

Nothing like analyzing the shit out of a kids flick at midnight in the
middle of the week. I'm a winner!
